David Bazan Live at the Grey Eagle – 11.4.07

A huge thanks to Scott Bradford for providing me with this super-awesome exclusive Bazan goodness.

Not many things better than David Bazan live. The man can sing and the man can write amazing songs. At the end of the day, what else matters? Bazan is on tour and going pretty much everywhere, about half of the US left to go including the south, west, and west coast. See those dates here.

EDIT: Here’s a zip. People are shamefully lazy. This is a huge file on my server so it will only be up for about five days.

[zip] Zip removed to ease the pain on my server. Right click save-as or option+clikc in firefox and do it “the old fashioned way”

Ryan Adams @ World Cafe | 9.28.2000

There’s no Ryan Adams like early Ryan Adams and I’ve really been coming back to this super short, super early set from Ryan at Philadelphia’s World Cafe. 4 songs from Heartbreaker-era and 3 interviews with a young, sober Ryan. Especially nice is the bluesy stomp feel of To Be Young when done in this particular acoustic arrangement.

Feist – Le Grand Rex: Paris, France, 4.26.2007

Continuing a series of excellent live shows, it makes me happy to offer for your listening pleasure this wonderful audio recording of Leslie Feist and her band of traveling minstrels playing to a warm and receptive crowd at the Le Grand Rex in Paris, France. Tis an audience recording, but it sounds pretty good to me!
If you don’t have Leslie’s newest album, The Reminder, then you’re pretty unintelligent.

M. Ward @ KEXP | March 14, 2005

In case you haven’t noticed, I prefer to share good music, be it old or new, rather than simply tracking buzz bands every move and pandering to the highest searches. Hopefully you guys don’t mind this.

That being said here is another gem from the KEXP in-studios (you can stream but not download all these on KEXP’s archive in Windows media or real media). The following is a short but oh so sweet set by M. Ward from March of 2005, relatively fresh off the release of Transistor Radio, my favorite M. Ward album.

[mp3] M. Ward – You Still Believe in Me (Live @ KEXP)
[mp3] M. Ward – I’ll Br Yr Bird (Live @ KEXP)
[mp3] M. Ward – Intervew (Live @ KEXP)
[mp3] M. Ward – Radio Campaign (Live @ KEXP)
[mp3] M. Ward – Sweethearts on Parade (Live @ KEXP)

M. Ward is currently on tour with Norah Jones.

Damien Jurado & The Band – 11.20.2006 Mejeriet, Lund, Sweden

This is a wonderful, wonderful show from Damien Jurado and his Band last November in Sweden. The quality is A+ and the set list is as well. I’m a little busy and I don’t have much time to write, or wait on my slow ftp server so I zipped it and put it on sendspace
Enjoy!

Bright Eyes – November 22, 2005 The Palladium, Worcester, MA.

As previously mentioned Bright Eyes are touring in support of their newest EP Four Winds which is due out March 6 on Saddle Creek. The EP (from the four songs I’ve heard) is quite good, mixing some of the poppiest and some of the most subdued Oberst material to date. I thought those of you who are anticipating these dates could use a little taste. The following show was preformed by Oberst and a full cast of his friends and fellow musicians at the The Palladium in Worcester, MA. This tour was not in support of an album which gave Conor free rein of the setlist, making it a very good show with songs ranging from A Collection of Songs to newly written and unreleased material.

I Don’t Mind the Weather…

As I’m typing this I am fearing being labeled a fanboy . Has my death cab coverage seemed excessive? 4 posts in 4 months really isn’t that much but let me know if it is.
Moving on, I thought it would be fun to start a small series of posts about bands who have that one song. The one song that is a setlist staple and is always the highlight of the show. Some would argue that Death cab’s is We looked Like Giants and the double drum solo, but the most exciting part of a death cab show to me is seeing what they will tack on to the end of Blacking out the Friction. Below are a few of the better ones.

Straight ahead, the way it was originally performed.

[mp3] Death cab for Cutie – Blacking out the Friction / Brand New Love
This one appears on the limited edition live ep, The John Byrd EP, named after the band’s tour engineer. The cover of Brand new Love (sebadoh) is great and there is some crazy drum action from McGerr.

Ben Gibbard @ 5th Floor Coffee House, Bellingham, WA. 1/19/01

Thursday I posted my favorite show of 2006. Over the next few days I am gonna try to post a few of my favorite shows period, as a christmas present to all of you.

In January of 2001 Ben Gibbard played his first public solo show since the formation of Death Cab for Cutie, four years prior. The show was at the 5th Floor Coffeehouse in Bellingham, WA. Ben talks alot about how nervous he is and even has Nick (Death Cab’s bassist) sit on the stage with him for a few songs. The setlist could not get any better. It was the debut of his famed Backstreet Boys cover and more importantly one of the only acoustic preformances of songs like Your Bruise, Two Cars, Rules Broken, No Joy in Mudville and Line of Best Fit. The show was comprised of Ben with an acoustic guitar and a drum machine on Rules Broken (A song from Ben’s All-Time Quarterback project)

Undertow Orchestra (Bazan, Johnson, Eitzel, Chesnutt) 2/28/06 Nashville, TN

The best show I saw in 2006 was The Undertow Orchestra at the Belcourt back in February. The Undertow Orchestra was a band of four songwriters rotating instruments to form a supergroup backing-band for each other while each played six songs of his own.
The band was formed from four very legendary indie songwriters: David Bazan (Pedro the Lion: drums and guitar), Will Johnson (Centro-Matic, South San Gabriel: drums and guitar), Mark Eitzel (American Music Club: acoustic guitar) and Vic Chesnutt (bass), with help from Scott Danbom (Centro-Matic: keys and violin). Everything about this evening was wonderful: The Belcourt is by far my favorite venue in Nashville, the sound was great, the guys were joking through the entire set and I was seven feet away from four of my favorite songwriters of all time. Ya know when you’re sitting around with your friends thinking up your dream band? That’s what this show was for me, so I figured some of you may enjoy it as much as I did.

Merry Christmas!
